I have not read much of Aquinas and I have never heard of de Chardin, but I do know that the only thing we can take with us to heaven is love of God and others. So if our virtues only give us love for ourselves (pride), like Mrs. Turpin's do, then they would have to be burned away, along with our pride and self-love, in order to see the face of God.

I also was intrigued by her comment about fire and water. Especiall...Lisa, this is right on target for today! Especially--"Contrary to the modern idea, Marxist ideology rejects the notion that human progress is a natural development and insists that, for the human condition to change fundamentally, the entire existing culture must be utterly destroyed, razed to the ground, and the ground salted, even more thoroughly than Rome once did to Carthage. Thus, the Communist Manifesto, which still governs Marxist influence throughout the world, insisted that all aspects of the existing culture -- religion, history, ideas, art -- must be obliterated, the slate wiped clean. Once this is achieved, the world can be "re-educated" to believe in a world where all are equal, where no one is subjugated, and where class strife no longer is possible because there simply are no separate classes to struggle against one another." Why don't some (many) people see the absolute danger in this? It tells a great story (in fact, the Greatest Story Ever Told), covers all of human history, is jam-packed with fascinating characters, has the greatest Hero ever to grace the lines of an epic, is the most tragic of all tales, and yet has the happiest ending imaginable. It's also the truest story ever told, and contains many levels of meaning. Best of all, it was written by the greatest Author there will ever be! So, yeah -- no contest. They held out as best they could, for as long as they could, against a massive tidal wave of radical ideologues. By the time the rest of the world came to realize what was happening, the damage had already been done, and the game was already over. It's very sad, but Ireland was I'll equipped to deal with it. No one can fault the Irish for not trying. We haven't fared any better in either Europe or America. I think your project of exposing young people to these ideas through classic movies is an excellent one. Modern education cheats young people by failing to give them even a glimpse of the ideals that have motivated people to excel for thousands of years -- in this regard, young people today are probably more greatly impoverished, on a moral level, than at any other time in the past two thousand years. The thing that bugged me most was Noah's insistence that EVERYONE must die, including himself -- that seemed anachronistic to me, as if he were one of the modern nuts who insists that Mankind is a cancer in the body of Mother Gaia, etc. Now that I've been re-reading the Epic of Gilgamesh (for my next post), I realize that Aronofsky displaced the anger at humanity of God/the gods and attributed it to Noah himself -- something that does not occur in any of the ancient sources, that I'm aware of. I guess I just felt that he was trying to make Noah too modern and messed up.

Stay tuned for my post on Gilgamesh -- we'll see where some of those "weird bits" that bugged me got their start.Lisa Nicholas, Ph. I especially liked the portrayal of the world before the Flood as being physically ruined by mankind's evil, as in "the ground is cursed because of you."kkollwitzhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17691145638703824456noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-244060080311485037.post-45228261415840135222015-02-24T18:38:51.786-06:002015-02-24T18:38:51.786-06:00Cheryl, I'm honored to provide an opportunity ...Cheryl, I'm honored to provide an opportunity for your return to the blogosphere. Congratulations on getting your book and study guide published! Re: having a theme for your blog -- if it's a blog for your readers, let it be about your writing (NOT the writing process, but about your characters, the world they inhabit, etc.). I'm working on a new blog for the readers I hope to have someday, when my own novel is published -- it will deal exclusively with things that will be of interest to those readers, although I will, of course, provide links to this blog as well. I want this blog, A Catholic Reader, to be all about helping people deepen and broaden their own reading, and offering insights from my own. Lisa Nicholas, Ph. The Odyssey is a great place to start -- in fact, the resolution of the suitor situation is one of the scenes in the Odyssey that will figure in a key scene at the beginning of Cast Into the Deep Sea of Stars, my current work-in-progress. As alien as the world of the ancient Greeks may seem to us today (and I don't think any modern person can feel *too* comfortable there), it nonetheless still has a lot to say to us. As I'll explain in my next post, I *don't* think the same is true, in quite the same way, of the epic of Gilgamesh.Lisa Nicholas, Ph.
